The 8 inch floppy disk was developed by IBM in 1971 and rapidly became a favourite means of storage. DEC produced RX01 and RX02 models which were mechanically similar, differing only in their electronics.

The power supply is at the rear of the drive, (right of the illustration). The control circuitry is mounted on two PCBs, which hinge open as shown.
